OPTIWISE Podcast Series – 8th Episode

In this episode, Maarten Flikkema talks to Norbert Bulten of Wartsila, who is responsible for integrating wind propulsion with mechanical propulsion systems and applying the Gate Rudder to ship designs in the OPTIWISE project.

 By building in flexibility in the mechanical propulsion arrangement through controllable pitch propellers and various engines, an additional benefit in flexibility can be achieved. The Gate Rudder has shown in other projects to have energy saving potential on its own, combined with wind assisted propulsion it increases the saving potential while improving the course keeping ability of the ship.
